Electric Sliding Gates: Built by Hand, Installed Properly

A sliding gate that glides open at the touch of a button is one of those upgrades that changes how a property feels every single day. Not just the convenience of it, but the look. A well-made electric sliding gate reads as serious, considered craftsmanship, and it holds that impression for years.

We fabricate and install electric sliding gates across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the wider Midlands, including Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Every gate we make is built by hand at our workshop in Draycott, designed around the specific opening, the specific customer and the specific finish they want.

This article covers how we work, what goes into a sliding gate installation, and what you should be thinking about before you get in touch.

Why a Sliding Gate Rather Than Swing?

It is a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the site.

Swing gates are simpler and often cheaper to automate, but they need clearance behind the gate to open. On a short driveway, or where a car tends to park close to the entrance, that clearance simply is not there. A sliding gate travels parallel to the boundary, so it needs no swing arc at all.

Sliding gates also tend to suit longer driveways and wider openings well. We regularly fabricate single-leaf sliding gates up to 5 metres in length. For residential properties across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, that covers the vast majority of driveway entrances.

If the site is level and there is a good run of hardstanding alongside the opening for the gate to travel along, a sliding gate on a track is usually the cleaner, more practical solution.

How We Design Your Gate

We do not work from a catalogue. Every gate starts with a conversation, and usually a site visit.

We come out to measure the opening, check the ground conditions, look at the surface the track will sit on, and talk through what you actually want it to look like. Customers often arrive with a photo saved on their phone, a rough sketch on paper, or just a general feel for the style. That is plenty to start from. We take it from there.

Materials we work in:

  • Mild steel, powder coated in any RAL colour you choose. Durable, cost-effective, and the most popular choice for residential driveways across Derby, Nottingham and the Midlands
  • Stainless steel, for a brushed or polished finish that will not rust and needs minimal maintenance
  • Aluminium, lightweight and naturally corrosion-resistant, a good option where weight is a consideration on the automation

We can add timber or composite infill panels to the gate frame if you want to reduce visibility through the gate. This is a popular choice in residential areas where privacy matters as much as security. You can read more about how we approach composite infill options in our article on Custom Composite Gates in Draycott: Design, Build and Installation.

The Track and the Ground: What You Need to Know

This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth being straightforward about it.

A sliding gate on a track requires a flat, solid surface for the track to be fixed to. Concrete or block paving is ideal. If the ground is uneven, sloped or soft, we will tell you before we quote, not after. There are ground-mounted options that suit different situations, and we will talk through what works for your specific site.

The track itself needs to run for roughly the full width of the gate alongside the opening. So for a 4-metre gate, you need roughly 4 metres of clear run next to the entrance. If that space is there, installation is straightforward. If there are obstacles, walls or planted borders in the way, we work out the best solution early in the process.

We also install the automation hardware as part of the job. We do not just make the gate and hand it over for someone else to wire up. The motor, the control box, the safety edges, the remote fobs, and any additional access controls are all fitted by us on site. That matters, because the gate and the automation need to work as one system.

Electric Sliding Gates for Builders and Developers

Homeowners make up the bulk of our work, but we also work regularly with builders, contractors and small developers across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the West Midlands.

If you are specifying a gate for a new build or a development with multiple plots, we can work from your drawings and produce gates to exact measurements. We are used to fitting around build programmes and site access schedules, and we can supply gates for installation by your own team if that suits the project better.

For commercial sites, car parks, industrial units and trade yards, we also fabricate heavier-duty sliding gates designed for more frequent daily use. The construction is the same careful, hand-built approach; the specification simply shifts to suit the load and the cycle count.

Gate Repairs and Automation Upgrades

Not every job is a new installation. We get regular enquiries from homeowners across Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield and Chesterfield who have an existing gate that has stopped working, or a manual gate they want to automate.

If the gate itself is sound, we can often fit automation to it without replacing the whole thing. If the metalwork has corroded, the hinges have gone or the frame has twisted, we will be honest about whether a repair is worth doing or whether a new gate makes more sense long-term.

We also restore and repair older wrought iron gates. The ironwork on older properties across the Midlands is often genuinely good quality underneath the rust, and it is usually worth saving. We can assess, repair, and repaint to bring it back to a standard where it will last another generation.

What Makes a Good Electric Sliding Gate Last

A few things that are worth knowing before you commit to any supplier, not just us.

Steel thickness matters. A gate made from thin-wall box section will flex and warp over time, especially on a wider span. We use appropriate section sizes for the span and the weight of the gate, and we weld properly, not just tack.

The finish determines the lifespan. Mild steel gates need to be properly prepared and powder coated to a good standard. We use external-grade powder coat that is applied after fabrication, including into corners and joints where moisture tends to sit.

Automation quality varies enormously. We install automation systems that are built for residential and light commercial use, with safety edges that stop and reverse the gate if an obstruction is detected. This is not optional; it is a basic safety requirement.

Safety at height. If your gate installation is part of a wider project involving railings, balustrades or a balcony, the height and loading requirements for those elements are governed by UK building regulations. We give general guidance, but always confirm the specifics with your building control officer before work starts.

If you are also planning railings or handrails as part of the same project, take a look at our article on Bespoke Metal Railings and Handrails for Draycott Homes and Gardens for more on how we approach that work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far do you travel for electric sliding gate installation in the Midlands? We cover Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as our core area, including Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Chesterfield. We also travel to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands for the right project. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, just call us and ask.

How wide can your electric sliding gates be? We fabricate single-leaf sliding gates up to 5 metres. For wider openings, we can discuss a bi-parting configuration, where two leaves slide in opposite directions to meet in the middle.

Do you need planning permission for an electric sliding gate? In many cases, residential driveway gates do not require planning permission, but this depends on the height, the property type, and whether the property is in a conservation area or is listed. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority before we start work. We can advise on what is typical in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the West Midlands, but the decision rests with your council.

Can you automate an existing manual gate? Sometimes, yes. It depends on the condition of the existing gate, the weight, the hinge arrangement, and whether the ground is suitable for a track. We assess this on site before we quote, so there are no surprises.
