Metal Gate Repairs & Hinges: When to Weld, When to Replace in Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire

A sagging gate is rarely just a nuisance

A gate that drags on the ground, swings open on its own, or simply refuses to close properly is telling you something. Usually it is the hinges. Over time, even well-made metalwork takes a beating from daily use, weather and the slow creep of corrosion. The good news is that most hinge failures are fixable, and fixing them properly costs a fraction of a full replacement.

We carry out metal gate repair work across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Chesterfield, as well as Birmingham and the West Midlands. If your gate is sagging, stiff, or the hinge has sheared clean off the post, get in touch and we will tell you honestly what is worth doing.

What actually goes wrong with metal gate hinges

Understanding the failure helps you explain it clearly and helps us quote accurately. The most common problems we see are:

  • Corrosion eating through the hinge knuckle or pin. Mild steel hinges without adequate paint or galvanising will rust from the inside out. By the time you notice the surface rust, the pin may already be pitted and loose.
  • Weld failure at the gate leaf or post plate. The hinge is only as strong as the weld holding it. A poor original weld, or a repair done with the wrong process, will crack again under load.
  • Gate sag stretching the hinge beyond its rated capacity. Heavy gates, especially those with timber or composite infill panels, put enormous leverage on the top hinge. If the hinge was undersized from the start, it will eventually deform.
  • Post movement. Sometimes the hinge itself is fine, but the post it is welded or bolted to has shifted. Concrete may have cracked, or a wooden post has rotted at the base. Replacing the hinge without addressing the post just repeats the problem.
  • Stripped or seized fixings on bolt-on hinges. Adjustable weld-on hinges are common on residential driveway gates. The adjustment bolts can seize solid with rust, making alignment impossible without intervention.

Knowing which of these you are dealing with changes the repair approach entirely.

Heavy-duty hinge repair: what it actually involves

For a straightforward hinge swap on a lighter garden gate, the job is relatively contained. We remove the old hinge, clean back the metal, and weld or bolt on a replacement. The gate goes back on, we check the swing and alignment, and we finish with a primer and topcoat that matches as closely as possible.

For heavier driveway gates, the work is more involved. A heavy-duty metal gate repair hinge needs to be matched to the gate weight and leaf width. Getting that wrong is one of the most common causes of repeat failure. We select hinges rated well above the actual gate weight, because gates get used hard and the rating needs to include a safety margin.

Where the original hinge was welded directly to the post, we grind back the old weld, prepare both surfaces properly, and re-weld using MIG or TIG depending on the material and the situation. On stainless steel gates, for example, TIG welding gives a far cleaner, stronger result than MIG, and the finish is much easier to blend. On structural mild steel posts, MIG is typically the right call for speed and penetration.

If you want to understand more about how we choose between processes, our article on MIG vs TIG welding: which process for your custom metalwork? covers the thinking in detail.

On-site welding: why it matters for gate repairs

A lot of fabricators will tell you to bring the gate in. That is fine if the gate is small and the post is removable. But most residential driveway gates in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are fixed to masonry pillars or steel posts set in concrete. You cannot bring those to a workshop.

We come to you. Our team travels to measure up, assess the damage, and carry out on-site welding where it is needed. That means Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Birmingham and across the West Midlands. We bring the equipment to the job, not the other way around.

On-site work also lets us check the full picture. A gate that looks like a hinge problem sometimes turns out to be a post problem, a latch problem, or a combination of all three. Seeing it in place means we catch that on the first visit rather than after the gate has come back off the wall.

Fix or replace? Being honest about it

We will always tell you if a repair is not worth doing. Some gates have corroded so far through the frame that welding new hinges onto them would be like fitting new wheels to a rusted chassis. The hinge would hold, but the frame around it would not.

Signs that a full replacement is likely the better call:

  • The gate frame is visibly buckled, cracked or holed with rust in multiple places
  • The original fabrication was poor quality and the gate has never sat right
  • The pillars or posts are failing, not just the hinges
  • The gate is an old mild steel design that has had multiple previous repairs and is reaching the end of its practical life

Where a replacement is the right answer, we can design and fabricate a new gate to match the existing opening, in mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium, with or without timber or composite infill panels. We work from your sketch, a photo of the original, or simply the measurements. Our article on bespoke metal gates from your sketch: how we design and build in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire explains the process from start to finish.

Materials and finishes after a hinge repair

A repair is only as good as the finish that protects it afterwards. Bare metal left exposed after grinding and welding will start to oxidise within days. We prime and paint as standard, and we can match an existing colour where the gate has a powder coat or paint finish.

For gates that will be repainted by the owner, we will prep the repaired area and leave it primed. For a full refinish, we can strip the gate back, treat any remaining corrosion, and apply a durable topcoat. Galvanised finishes are an option for mild steel gates that need long-term protection without regular maintenance.

Stainless steel gates do not need painting, but the weld area needs to be dressed and blended so it does not look like a patch job. We take care over that.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair metal gate hinges without removing the gate from its posts?

Often, yes. If the hinge has sheared at the gate leaf rather than at the post, we can sometimes carry out the repair with the gate in position, or simply lift it off, do the work on the ground nearby, and rehang it the same day. Where the post weld has failed, we need to work at the post itself, which is easier with the gate removed. We assess this on site and tell you what we plan to do before we start.

My gate is very heavy. Can you source heavy-duty metal gate repair hinges that will actually hold?

Yes. We source hinges rated for a range of gate weights and sizes, and we select based on the actual gate, not just what fits. For very large or heavy driveway gates, we often fabricate bespoke hinge plates rather than relying on off-the-shelf components. A fabricated plate welded directly to the post gives far more bearing area and load distribution than a standard bolt-on hinge on a heavy gate.

Is it worth repairing an old wrought iron or mild steel gate rather than buying a new one?

It depends on the condition of the frame and whether the gate has any character worth preserving. Old wrought ironwork in particular can be worth repairing properly because modern replacements rarely have the same detailing. We are honest about this. If the metalwork is structurally sound and the problem is isolated to the hinges or latch, a repair almost always makes more sense. If the frame itself is failing, we will tell you.

Do you cover Birmingham and the West Midlands for gate hinge repairs, or just Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire?

We cover both. Our workshop is at Unit 4 Draycott Mills, Market Street, Draycott, DE72 3NB, but we travel to customers across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Birmingham and the West Midlands. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, just call us and we will confirm.

Get your gate sorted before it becomes a bigger problem

A loose or broken hinge left too long puts stress on the gate frame, the post and the latch. What starts as a straightforward hinge repair can become a frame repair, or a full replacement, if the gate is left dragging and swinging for a season.

If your gate is giving you trouble anywhere across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Birmingham or the West Midlands, we are happy to take a look and give you a straight answer about what is needed. We quote each job individually once we understand what is involved.
