Sheet Metal Fabrication: What We Actually Do at Jayded Metalworks

Sheet metal is one of the most versatile materials we work with. Cut it, bend it, weld it and finish it correctly and you can produce almost anything: a gate leaf, a handrail bracket, a Juliette balcony frame, a custom shelf bracket, a machine guard. The material is the starting point. What matters is the skill applied to it.

At Jayded Metalworks, we fabricate bespoke metalwork by hand from our workshop at Unit 4 Draycott Mills, Market Street, Draycott, DE72 3NB. We work across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, covering Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Chesterfield, and we also travel to Birmingham and across the West Midlands. If you have a drawing, a sketch or just a clear idea of what you need, we can usually make it.

What Sheet Metal Fabrication Actually Involves

Sheet metal fabrication is the process of turning flat metal stock into a finished, functional component or structure. It typically involves some combination of:

  • Cutting, by angle grinder, plasma cutter or guillotine, depending on the thickness and material
  • Bending and forming, using a press brake or by hand for tighter radii and compound shapes
  • Welding, MIG for speed and structural work, TIG for cleaner, more precise joins on stainless and thinner gauges
  • Grinding and finishing, removing weld splatter, smoothing edges, preparing for paint, powder coat or a brushed finish

We work in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Each behaves differently on the bench and each suits different applications. Mild steel is strong, easy to weld and takes powder coat well. Stainless steel is harder to work but gives a clean, corrosion-resistant finish with no ongoing maintenance. Aluminium is lightweight and naturally resistant to rust, which makes it ideal for balcony frameworks and coastal or exposed installations.

The Kinds of Jobs We Fabricate

People often search for "metal fabricators near me" or "steel fabrication near me" expecting a large industrial unit that only takes on big commercial contracts. We are not that. We are a bespoke workshop, which means we take on one-off pieces, small runs and custom repairs alongside larger projects.

Here is a cross-section of the work we regularly fabricate:

Gates and security grilles. Mild steel or aluminium driveway gates, pedestrian gates, side-access gates and security grilles. Each one is drawn up from the customer's measurements or our own site survey, fabricated to fit the exact opening and finished to order. If you want an electric sliding gate on a track, we handle that too, up to 5 metres. You can read more about bespoke gate design in our article on bespoke metal gates for Derby and Nottinghamshire.

Railings, handrails and balustrades. Staircase handrails, garden railings, balustrade infills for landings, external step rails for older properties and shopfront steps. This is steady work across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, particularly for period cottages and Victorian terraces where original ironwork has rusted through or been removed. For stair and landing applications, building regulations set minimum barrier heights and loading requirements, we always advise customers to confirm the current figures with their building control officer before we finalise a design.

Juliette balconies. A Juliette balcony is essentially a railing fixed across a French door opening at first-floor level. It gives the look of a balcony without the structural complexity of a projecting platform. We fabricate these in mild steel, stainless and aluminium. More detail on the design options is in our article on Juliette balconies for Nottingham and Derby homes.

Custom brackets, frames and fixings. One of the most common requests we get from builders and small businesses is for one-off structural brackets, machine guards, shelf frames and support structures. If a standard off-the-shelf part does not exist or does not fit, we make it. This is exactly the kind of job that suits a bespoke workshop rather than a large production fabricator.

Steel furniture and display pieces. Workbenches, shelving, plant stands, display frames, table bases. These are popular with homeowners wanting something that will last, and with commercial clients fitting out retail spaces, cafés and hospitality venues.

Repairs and restoration. Existing gates, railings and structural steelwork that have corroded, cracked or been damaged. Often a repair is more sensible than a full replacement, and we are honest about that. If the base metal is sound, a weld repair, a replacement section and a fresh finish can add years of life.

Why Bespoke Fabrication Is Not the Same as Buying Off the Shelf

A lot of customers come to us having already tried to find a standard product. They have measured a non-standard opening, or they want a specific design, or the available options simply do not suit the property. That is where bespoke fabrication earns its place.

We design from your sketch or photo. We visit the site to measure up. We fabricate in the workshop and install ourselves. That means one point of contact from first call to finished job, and no coordination headaches between a supplier and a separate installer.

We work Monday to Saturday and cover the full stretch of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Chesterfield, as well as Birmingham and the West Midlands. Distance is not usually a barrier for the right job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sheet metal fabrication, with a real example?

Sheet metal fabrication is the process of cutting, bending and welding flat metal sheets into a finished component. A straightforward example is a driveway gate: we start with flat mild steel sheet and hollow section, cut the parts to length, weld the frame together, add any decorative or functional elements, grind the welds smooth and apply a powder-coat finish. The same process, scaled or adapted, applies to a handrail bracket, a machine guard or a custom shelf frame.

What metals cannot be welded together?

Most common structural metals can be joined by welding, but some combinations cause problems. Aluminium and steel, for instance, cannot be fusion-welded directly because they have very different melting points and the joint becomes brittle. Where a design needs both materials, we use mechanical fixings or transition pieces rather than attempting a direct weld. We will always flag this kind of issue at the design stage rather than let it become a problem on site.

What are the main methods used in metal fabrication?

The core processes are cutting (sawing, grinding, plasma cutting), bending and forming (press brake, hand forming), welding (MIG, TIG, stick), grinding and surface preparation, and finishing (paint, powder coat, brushed or polished). Most bespoke fabrication jobs involve several of these in sequence. For a gate, for example, you cut the steel, form any curved sections, weld the assembly, grind the joins and then finish the surface. We carry out all of these in-house, which keeps quality consistent throughout.

Do you visit site, or is it workshop-only?

We visit. For anything structural or fitted, a site visit is part of the process. We come out to measure, discuss the design in person and check for any complications before we start fabricating. Once the piece is ready, we install it ourselves. That applies whether the job is in Nottingham, Derby, Chesterfield, Birmingham or anywhere else in our service area. We do not just hand over a flat-pack and leave you to work it out.

Getting a Quote for Sheet Metal Fabrication

Every job is different, so we quote individually once we understand what is needed. The best starting point is a phone call or an email with a rough description, a sketch or a photo. We will tell you honestly whether it is the kind of job we take on, and if it is, we will arrange to visit and measure up.

We are based at Unit 4 Draycott Mills, Market Street, Draycott, DE72 3NB, and we serve customers across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Chesterfield, as well as Birmingham and the West Midlands.
