Gate Repairs & Restoration in Derby & Chesterfield: When to Fix, When to Replace

Gate repairs in Derby and Chesterfield: what we fix and how we do it

A sagging gate is one of those problems that starts as a mild annoyance and quietly becomes a security risk. We see it regularly across Derby, Chesterfield and the wider Derbyshire area. A hinge pulls away from the post, a weld cracks at the corner of the frame, or a bottom rail rusts through after years of sitting close to wet ground. The gate still swings, just about, so the job gets pushed back. Then one morning it doesn't swing at all.

We are Jayded Metalworks, a bespoke fabrication workshop with 20 years of hands-on experience. We work in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, MIG and TIG welding in-house, and we travel to measure up and assess repairs across Derby, Chesterfield, Nottingham, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield and Birmingham. If your gate is worth saving, we will tell you honestly. If it isn't, we will tell you that too.

Common problems with outdoor gates (and whether they're worth repairing)

Most gate failures come down to a handful of causes. Knowing which one you're dealing with helps you decide whether a repair makes sense or whether replacement is the better investment.

Hinge failure. The most common call we get. Hinges take the full weight of the gate every time it opens, and if the original fixings were undersized or the post has moved, they work loose fast. In many cases we can re-drill, refit with heavier fixings and weld a reinforcing plate. Job done in a morning.

Frame distortion. A gate that was once square can rack out of shape if one post settles or if a vehicle clips it. Mild steel is forgiving. We can often press or heat the frame back to true, re-weld any cracked joints and rehang. Aluminium is trickier because it doesn't respond to heat correction the same way, but folded or cracked sections can be replaced.

Rust and corrosion. Surface rust on mild steel is cosmetic. Deep pitting that has eaten through a rail or a bar is structural. We grind back to clean metal, assess the depth of the damage and either weld in new material or, if the gate is heavily corroded overall, advise replacement. There is no point welding a patch onto a frame that will fail six inches away next year.

Broken or cracked welds. Welds crack when the original join was underrun, when the metal moved during fabrication, or simply after decades of use. We grind back the old weld, prepare the joint properly and re-weld. On decorative gates with scrollwork or ornate panels, TIG welding gives a cleaner, neater result.

Drop bolts and locking hardware. Sometimes the gate itself is fine but the drop bolt has seized, the lock barrel has corroded or the keep has torn out of the ground. We can replace hardware, refit keeps and adjust the gate height so everything lines up again.

Can wrought iron gates be repaired?

Yes, and we would always try. Genuine wrought iron gates, especially older ones, have real character that you cannot replicate cheaply. The material itself is actually very weldable with the right technique and preparation. We use MIG or TIG depending on the section size and the finish required.

The most common wrought iron repair we carry out is re-welding broken scrolls or decorative elements that have cracked away from the main frame. We can also fabricate replacement sections to match the original profile where a bar or rail is beyond saving. If the gate is a period piece on a Derby or Chesterfield property, it is almost always worth restoring rather than replacing with something pressed from a catalogue.

How we approach a gate repair job

We come to you. That matters because a gate cannot tell you everything from a photo. We need to see the post, the ground condition, how the gate hangs and what the latch or lock is doing. From Derby and Chesterfield we can usually arrange a site visit quickly, and we cover the full Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area as well as Birmingham and the West Midlands.

On site we will:

  • Assess the frame, hinges, fixings and posts
  • Check whether the posts themselves have moved or corroded (a new gate on a rotten post is a waste of money)
  • Give you an honest view on repair versus replacement
  • Discuss finish options, whether that's a fresh coat of primer and paint, a powder coat or a wax finish for a more traditional look

If the repair is straightforward we can often take the gate back to our workshop at Unit 4 Draycott Mills, Market Street, Draycott, DE72 3NB, carry out the work and return it within a few days. Larger or more complex jobs are quoted individually.

Steel, aluminium and wrought iron: how the repair approach differs

Not all metals behave the same way under a welder, and the repair method has to match the material.

Mild steel is the most forgiving. It welds cleanly, grinds back easily and accepts primer and paint well. Most driveway gates across Derby and Chesterfield are mild steel, and most repairs are very achievable.

Stainless steel requires TIG welding to keep the finish clean and avoid discolouration around the weld zone. It's worth doing properly on stainless because a rough MIG weld on a brushed or polished surface is very visible. We have the kit and the experience to handle it.

Aluminium is lighter and corrosion-resistant but it cracks rather than bends, and it doesn't respond to heat straightening the way steel does. Aluminium gate repairs often mean replacing a section rather than reforming it, but that is still far cheaper than a new gate.

Wrought iron (see above) welds well with preparation. The key is cleaning back the joint properly before you start.

If you have a gate that needs attention and you're not sure what it's made from, don't worry. We can identify the material on site and advise accordingly.

When repair doesn't make sense

We will always be straight with you. If a gate has corroded through in multiple places, if the frame is so distorted it can't be brought back to square, or if the decorative infills are beyond matching, replacement is the honest answer. We fabricate bespoke gates from scratch, designed from your sketch or photo, so moving from repair to replacement doesn't mean settling for something off a shelf. You can read more about what's possible in our article on bespoke metal gates for Derby and Nottinghamshire.

If your existing gates are driveway gates and you've been thinking about adding automation, a repair visit is a good time to discuss whether your current gate is suitable for a sliding or swing motor setup. We cover electric sliding gate installation across the Midlands. More detail on that is in our guide to electric sliding gates on track.

Frequently asked questions

Can wrought iron gates be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Wrought iron welds well when the joint is properly prepared, and we can fabricate replacement sections to match original profiles where a bar or scroll is beyond saving. Older wrought iron gates on Derby and Chesterfield properties are almost always worth restoring rather than replacing.

What are the most common problems with outdoor metal gates?

Hinge failure and corrosion are the two we see most often. Hinge problems usually come from undersized original fixings or post movement. Corrosion tends to attack the bottom rails and any joints where water sits. Cracked welds, seized drop bolts and racked frames round out the typical list.

How do I know if my gate needs repairing or replacing?

If the frame is structurally sound, the posts are solid and the damage is localised, repair is usually the right call. If corrosion has spread through most of the metalwork, or the frame is so distorted it can't be brought back to square, replacement makes more sense. We give you an honest assessment on site before you commit to anything.

Do you repair aluminium and steel gates as well as wrought iron?

Yes. We work in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, and we carry out repairs on all three. The approach differs by material. Mild steel is the most straightforward. Aluminium often means replacing a cracked section rather than reforming it. Stainless steel repairs use TIG welding to keep the finish clean. Whatever you have, we can assess it and tell you what's realistic.
